Meanwhile the sitting president, forced to pull out of his re-election campaign because he’s clearly too debilitated to go on, is replaced by his unpopular vice-president, who somehow reinvents herself as a new political phenomenon.

It’s too incredible, yet true. And with just weeks to go before America decides on 5 November, the presidential election remains on a knife-edge.
