Domaine du Grand Mayne Winemaker's Lunch - SOLD OUT
Domaine du Grand Mayne is a multi-award-winning artisan winery in the Côtes du Duras, near Bordeaux, which, thanks to hugely successful crowd-funding, is owned by a community of some 900 canny wine lovers. Head winemaker Mathieu Crosnier will introduce selected vintages of the Domaine du Grand Mayne Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine du Grand Mayne Réserve Sauvignon/Sémillon, Domaine du Grand Mayne Rosé, Domaine du Grand Mayne Merlot/Cabernet and Domaine du Grand Mayne Réserve Cabernet/Merlot and – with luck – the estate’s delectable sweet wine.
Founded in 1891 in Coonawarra in the Limestone Coast of South Australia, Wynns is renowned for its blockbusting, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons grown on the region’s Mediterranean-like terra rossa or red soil and we will taste a mouth-watering quartet to included Wynns The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon, Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, Wynns Michael Shiraz and Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon (vintages TBC).
We will discuss the differences between the iconic Bodegas Hildago La Gitana Manzanilla, Amontillado, Oloroso & PX sherry explaining their methods of production and suggesting the most suitable food matches as we taste a selection of carefully chosen half bottle (or 50cl) examples.
SOLD OUT Wine is in Christian’s blood and we could have no better guide as we learn about the skill of blending and the importance of terroir by tasting the estate’s second and third wines – Les Tourelles de Longueville and Les Griffon de Pichon – as well as mighty Pichon Baron itself, all made by the same winemaking team and all from the excellent 2016 vintage.
We will taste the 2016 Te Muna Sauvignon Blanc, 2014 Te Muna Pinot Noir and 2016 Gimblett Gravels Syrah as we discover how special the wines of New Zealand are and just how terroir-specific.
The great Anthony Hamilton Russell himself – star of many a Spectator Winemaker’s Lunch – will join us from his estate as he talks us through three of his fabled wines and discusses the many challenges that currently face South African winemakers.
Josh Donaghay-Spire and chief commercial officer, Mark Harvey, will be our guides as we taste three multi-award-winning, terroir-driven wines from their Kit’s Coty vineyard high in the North Downs, namely the 2018 Kit’s Coty Estate Bacchus, the 2017 Kit’s Coty Chardonnay and the sparkling 2015 Kit’s Coty Blanc de Blancs.
