By almost every conventional measure, women in the West have never had it better. They’re more educated, financially independent, influential in public life and sexually liberated than ever before. But has this progress come at a price?

Research suggests that women’s happiness has declined since the 1960s, relative to men’s, supporting the claim that liberation has come with hidden costs: the pressure to ‘have it all’, the commercialisation of women’s insecurities, and a casual dating culture that, some argue, benefits men more than women. But are these simply down to the inevitable challenges of modern life?
